Cally Spooner

Biography
Based in Torino, Cally Spooner (b. 1983) is a British-Italian artist, choreographer, and writer. Grounded in her training in socio-political philosophy, her research-based practice begins with writing and unfolds through performance, dance, drawing, film, and sound. Her work investigates the effects of “performance” on the contemporary human and digital condition, particularly within financialised and metric systems in which bodies are compelled to perform as commodities and markets. In response, Spooner examines how such structures shape the ways we move and how we might move differently. Her practice approaches choreography as the movement and interaction between bodies, space, time, energy, and the elements, extending this thinking to embodied forms of writing and research. Her work has been widely exhibited internationally.

Residency project
At La Becque, Cally Spooner will explore convergences between proliferations of grief, Mike Kelley unmaking his work in 1981, and entropic wildernesses. Moving away from the ascendance and acceleration of financial markets and digital networks that her practice has examined over the past decades, she will turn towards psychosomatic irreconcilability, planetary redistribution, and cultural unmaking. During the residency, Spooner will explore these movements through land-movement scores, an epic poem on grief, and an expanded conversation on liveness as “a refusal to settle.” These investigations will become material for a minor intelligence ballet, to be developed in 2028.
