Taisuke Koyama (JP, 1978)
Residency period : October 2024
My residency was organized as part of a program by Photo Elysée, in connection with the group exhibition ‘Super Natural!’ celebrating the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Japan. Prior to this residency, the ‘Super Natural!’ photo exhibition was held at the Yau Center in Tokyo, co-organized by the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan, Photo Elysée, and Tokyo Photographic Research.
During my stay at La Becque, I visited curators and directors in Lausanne, Vevey, Geneva, Winterthur, and Zurich. I was also invited by Milo Keller to serve as a guest lecturer for the Master Photography class at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, where I conducted portfolio reviews.
I also spent most of my days visiting various locations for meetings and other engagements. However, I made it a daily routine to record the surface of Lake Geneva on video at least once a day. The lake’s surface, reflecting the ever-changing weather, displayed a rich variety of expressions, with no two moments ever the same. This constant transformation captured my interest. I hope to use these recorded materials to eventually create an experimental video work. — Taisuke Koyama
Based in Tokyo, Taisuke Koyama (b. 1978) is a Japanese photographer whose artistic work draws on his experience of studying biology and the natural environment. Using photography and video to recontextualize the urban environment, he produces works that explore the possibilities of image-making in the post-digital age using scientific viewpoints and experimental production methods.
Since 2018, Koyama has been leading projects with the Tokyo Photographic Research collective, which explores the city and society through contemporary photographic and video expression.
For this residency, Photo Elysée has been provided with space by La Becque, thanks to the support of Nestlé.
