Hanne Lippard

Residency report
Approaching the residency with the existing project “Speaker,” seeing the human voice and the technical device as simultaneous extensions of the self, I gave myself time to go deeper into the material with more focus. Another helpful attribute of La Becque was access to a recording studio which was available on a daily basis, for the first time in my artistic practice. There I worked on a series titled “Language Loops” repeating simple intuitive lines that become a vocalized rhythm as much as pure syntax, a more subconscious way of composing a work. One of these compositions evolved into the inaugural six-channel sound installation “Endolphins” presented in Artefact at STUK in Leuven during the residency period.

In general the residency gave me access to a lot of utilities that I do not otherwise have in my studio practice, as well as silence and concentration, enabling me to finalize my upcoming album “Talk Shop” which will be released on Dischi Fantom. I also established interesting artistic connections with some of the fellow residents, especially with Ellen Arkbro, whom I since then have had the pleasure of collaborating with on a new trio project involving the organist Hampus Lindwall, playing concerts at September Sessions in Stockholm in September as well as Organ Sound Art Festival in Copenhagen in December. — Hanne Lippard

Biography
Hanne Lippard is a Berlin-based Norwegian artist who works with language, identity, speech and technology. Her education in graphic design informs how language can be visually powerful: her texts are visual, rhythmic and performative rather than purely informative and her work is conveyed through a variety of disciplines, which include short films, sound pieces, installations and performance. In her work, she positions herself in the role of a narrator, with works conveyed mostly through performance and sound-installations.
