ORB – RANI YASMINE PUTRI (ID, 1994) & DAVID LOY (FR, 1990)
Residency period: September 2023
Our residency project HEAT aimed to extract and vulgarize IPCC Synthesis Report by attempting to formulate a more accessible visual and reading experience of the report’s discovery and data. It is an exploration and research on data visualization, data science and psychological storytelling to assess comprehensibility of information.
Issue 01 focused on the first chapter of the Synthesis Report, which reveals the current status and trends. Twelve subjects were consciously selected out of the first section, with the intend to zoom in each subject matter; scientifically and theoretically clarify them through conversations, writing and essays.
During our time in La Becque, we focused on the first subject: Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions, as well as the general visual identity of the project, utilizing less institutional graphic illustration and animation. We investigated methods of GHG image detection through the use of optical gas imaging cameras, and analyzed different data visualization tools via the open-source IPCC socio-economic and environmental data. The overall goal within these was to evaluate the general question of information accessibility; how does imagery, color, text size, illustration of data affect psychological and practical response of readers?
As we also started a network link with IPCC, which is headquartered in Geneva, the subsequent step after the EXECAL residency is to conduct interviews and converse with personalities within IPCC and related fields. — Rani Yasmine Putri & David Loy
