Invernomuto (IT, 1983/1982)
Residency period: May-July 2025
During our residency at La Becque we have been developing the crucial phases of our project Triton—a cross-media ongoing work centered on a personal, portable device that evolves as an open artwork. This sentient and portable sculpture, capable of emitting sound, light and scent, analyzes a microcosm and transfers it to an aural dimension.
Drawing inspiration from a real colony of tritons, amphibians that have mysteriously inhabited two rain-filled basins carved into the rock of Pietra Perduca in Val Trebbia, near our birthplace, the project seamlessly blends ancient myths with contemporary technology. It prompts deep reflection on the intricate interplay between nature, sentient feelings, and digital systems.
At La Becque, we worked extensively on creating and testing generative audio and behavioral patterns for the device, exploring various approaches to ambient and functional music. While holding bi-weekly remote meetings with the rest of the team, we also developed the project’s communication and strategy plan and brainstormed the features and behaviors the device will need to have.
During the residency, we further developed the project’s performative output, designing the second chapter of the listening session. For the Open Studios, we presented a piece combining generative music, a real-time video feed from a camera installed at Pietra Perduca, and a short written chronicle. — Invernomuto
Invernomuto is the name of the artistic duo founded in 2003 by Italian artists Simone Bertuzzi (b. 1983) and Simone Trabucchi (b. 1982). Based in Milan, Invernomuto has conducted a series of research projects structured in time and space, from which the artists have derived cycles of interconnected works. Drawing upon a common theoretical basis, Invernomuto adopts an open, rhizomatic approach, developing different outputs that take the form of moving images, sounds, performative actions, and publishing projects, within the framework of a practice defined by the use—both diffuse and precise—of different media. Invernomuto investigates subcultural universes using vernacular language as a means of approaching oral cultures and contemporary mythologies. Both artists are also engaged in individual research with the musical projects Palm Wine and STILL.
Triton is produced in collaboration with Haus der Kunst München and supported by the Italian Council program (2024) promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
