ARTIST COMMUNITIES – I have a relationship with my work
23.02.2023
Curated by Vanessa Cimorelli, Artist Communities is a quarterly cycle of public meetings and conversations featuring La Becque residents and other artists and protagonists of contemporary art-making. Based primarily on the concept of “community”, each discussion circle offers the public the opportunity to exchange with the speakers on their practices and experiences with regard to key contemporary themes.
This first discussion joined Madison Bycroft, Ife Day and Dominique White and looked at possible worlds, whether past or present. Through this invitation to a poetic retelling of artistic and community-building processes, we explored various facets of the relationships that emerge in and through artistic work. What is at the core of our practices? What do we share of them, and what slips between our fingers?
During this conversation, the artists shared the methods by which their work has become an extension of their resistance. Although the work itself may be reflexive, it nevertheless does not escape a certain autonomy, and may then sometimes carry the ambivalence of conflicting perspectives. In the midst of this permeability, how do we stand and what tools do we need to use to be more responsible? Can we protect ourselves from that? And to what extent is that possible?
As we move through narratives, myths and stories, we dedicated particular attention to the notion of the playground.
