TJ Shin

Biography
TJ Shin (b. 1993) is an artist and writer based in Los Angeles. Their multimedia practice explores how structures of power discursively shape perception, form, and environment. They examine media as both technology and infrastructure through which information and conditions of knowledge are produced and transmitted. Across genres and sites, their work interrogates the spatial, linguistic, and temporal systems that mediate the boundaries of experience and the edges of the frame, while considering their potential for rupture. Solo and two-person exhibitions have been presented at Los Angeles State Historic Park, MIT List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge, Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art, and Lewis Center for the Arts in Princeton, among other venues. Their writing has appeared in Asia Art Archive, Mousse Magazine, and Post/doc, published by the Vera List Center for Art and Politics.

Residency project
At La Becque, TJ Shin will develop a research-based film tracing how Peter Kropotkin’s encounter with the watchmakers of Saint-Imier, an important centre of the international anarchist movement in the nineteenth century, shaped anarcho-communism, and how radical thought traveled through transnational networks into the Korean anti-colonial struggle during the early twentieth century. Working with archives at the Centre International de Recherches sur l’Anarchisme (CIRA) in Lausanne and historic sites in Saint-Imier, the project examines how radical resistance, mutual aid, and political time moved across Switzerland and East Asia.
