Luna Mahoux

Biography
Based in Brussels, Luna Mahoux is a Belgian artist working across film, photography, and installation. Her practice explores invisibilized Afro-diasporic narratives through a dialogue between personal archives, vernacular images, and popular internet culture. Drawing from intimate and collective histories, she creates visual essays that question memory, the circulation of images, and the politics of representation. A graduate of La Cambre in Brussels, she joined Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains in Tourcoing in 2023. Her first documentary, The Other Queen of Memphis, was selected in competition at Cinéma du Réel at Centre Pompidou in Paris. Her work has been presented at Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection in Paris, KANAL – Centre Pompidou in Brussels, FOMU in Antwerp, Photo Elysée in Lausanne, and Basel Social Club. She received the FOMU tiff – Emerging Belgian Photography Prize in 2023 and the Fintro Prize in 2024.

Residency project
At La Becque, Luna Mahoux will develop her first fiction short film, produced by French filmmakers Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel through their production company 444 Films. Inspired by her experience of chemotherapy in Liège, the film follows a protagonist in the week preceding an MRI, travelling through the city and surrounding forests with her former boyfriend and two friends as memories and archival images surface. During the residency, Mahoux will develop the screenplay, experiment with music alongside Ethiopian and Eritrean musicians, and pursue research into genetics and illness among Black women in Ethiopia and the United States. She will also engage with Orthodox communities and collaborate with artists, curators, and musicians to shape the film’s narrative, soundtrack, and collaborative dimension.
