iahra
Biography
iahra (b. 1993) is a Brazilian artist born and based in Rio de Janeiro. Working across sculpture, installation, and performance, her practice is grounded in a topological poetics and an investigation of forms and states of matter that evoke folds, curves, cocoons, coverings, and weavings. Her material explorations intersect with metaphysical, alchemical, and cosmological concepts through speculative and science-fictional modes of thinking. A graduate in Sculpture from the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, iahra has participated in residency programmes at MAM Rio and Solar dos Abacaxis in Rio de Janeiro. Her work has been presented at Centro Cultural São Paulo, Museu das Favelas and MASP in São Paulo, among other venues, and was recently acquired for the collection of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo.
Residency project
At La Becque, iahra will deepen the installative and environmental dimensions of her practice, creating conditions through which to imagine other worlds beyond the separations and Cartesian values that shape modern relationships with the living. She will develop a performative installation bringing together materials central to her practice, including glass, paper, water, and iron, in relation to her body through skin and voice. Drawing on the scientific concept of hatching, the project will explore processes of metamorphosis and birth, as well as movements and encounters between different forms of matter.
