Nursalim Yadi Anugerah (ID, 1991)
Residency period: January-March 2027
Nursalim Yadi Anugerah is a composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Pontianak, whose work weaves sonic experimentation with cultural practice, knowledge production, and the cosmologies of Indigenous peoples in Kalimantan (Borneo). Engaging with socio-cultural and environmental concerns, his compositions blend Kalimantan Indigenous music and symbols, the Indonesian underground noise scene, ritual chants, and European avant-garde traditions to critique ecological devastation and reflect on survival.
His works have been presented at the International Young Composers Meeting and Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Utrecht), AsiaTOPA (Melbourne), Holland Festival, and Theater der Welt (Germany), as well as in sound installations at documenta fifteen (Kassel), the Singapore Biennale, and Biennale Jogja (Yogyakarta).
During his residency at La Becque, Nursalim Yadi Anugerah will explore themes of land oppression, social disparity, and the environmental destruction driven by extractive industries through the kadedek, a traditional Borneo mouthorgan that embodies harmony with its tropical origins yet now faces the threat of ecological loss. Incorporating the instrument’s drones into sound installations alongside mechanical elements, he will expand on the “nature of violence” embedded in ecological imagery, using the kadedek to evoke both transcendence and oppression. In resonance with the landscapes and climate around La Becque, the project will reframe the instrument’s traditional context, creating new connections between Indigenous heritage, environmental crisis, and experimental sound practice.
