Jakob Kudsk Steensen (DK, 1987)
Residency period: October-December 2019
I made the most of my residency at La Becque to develop a concept for a new project on liminal lands and the exploration of the spaces between land and ocean, the horizontal and the vertical, the extinct and the living, the virtual and the physical and the muddy and the dry. The work focuses on bio-connecting humans with environments through technology, creating a landscape where artists can collaborate and shape something new. It is about terraforming, natural and cultural history and forgotten relevant landscapes that we have lost in the 20thcentury.
Jakob Kudsk Steensen is an artist concerned in how imagination, technology and ecology intertwine. For his work, he takes intense photographic excursions and then transposes this material into a virtual world populated by mythical beings, using 3D scanners, photogrammetry, satellite data and video game software. Inspired by science fiction, biology and ethnography, his projects have been presented at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, FRIEZE London, the Serpentine Galleries in London and MAXXI in Rome.
