Garrett Nelson
Residency period: August 2021
For one month, as part of our collaboration with the Centre culturel suisse. Paris, we welcomed the artist Garrett Nelson. They conducted a project on the work and legacy of swiss artist Cathy Josefowitz (1956-2014).
The performance took the form of a trilogy entitled The Anacrónica Trilogy. The first part was presented in Cathy Josefowitz’s exhibition in the Kunsthaus Langenthal under the title Anacrónica I: I Did Henry Kissenger’s Eyebrows. The second part happened at the Arsenic under the title Anacrónica II: Lying on the Hip accompanied by a selection of original works by Cathy Josefowitz chosen by Garrett Nelson and curator Elise Lammer, and finally the third part at the Centre culturel suisse in Paris under the title Anacrónica III: The Mesmeric Sermons of the Nudists.
Garrett lives and works in Malagueño, Argentina. As a visual artist, writer and occasional filmmaker, Nelson uses referential impulse, theoretical or historical research, literature and poetics as a basis for installation and performance. Their installations function as physical lecture material. The performances straddle the line between philosophy, literature and poetics and become a theory of myth for discussions about silence, interaction or the ontology of words and languages.
