James Rushford & Anaïs Tuerlinckx – cave12

Not to be missed! On Sunday February 20, Geneva’s leading experimental music venue cave12 invites the Australian composer and musician James Rushford to perform, with Anaïs Tuerlinckx rounding up the bill.

James has just returned to La Becque and will spend the next two months with us, completing a residency that was cut short in spring 2020. He will thus continue his exploration of the particular magnetism of Lac Léman under its wintery guise, following up on a wonderful first album, Lake From The Louvers, which we co-released in 2021 with our friends at the wonderful Shelter Press imprint (whose Félicia Atkinson and Bartolomé Sanson were residents here at the same time as James).

As the wise scribes at Boomkat put it last year, Lake From The Louvers is an album that draws its inspiration from the interplay of shadow and light Rushford observed on the surface of the lake and through his window at La Becque. Rushford’s detailed sound particles and concrète world-building echo the tantalising shimmer of light on water, with amplified movements, synthesized squawks, pings and harp notes rippling across the length of each track. It’s music that accurately represents the landscape but is far from ambient - instead Rushford sculpts soundscapes that demand patient, attentive listening. Futuristic and ancient, Lakes From The Louvers is a breathtaking album that unspools with the patience it no doubt took to create.”

Also on the lineup on Sunday, Berlin-based Belgian pianist Anaïs Tuerlinckx will present her new album Dissection lente d’un piano rouillé. She will perform a dense and compact performance, at times intense and brutal, at times thoughtfully engaging with the deep materiality of her instrument.
