Noorani Echo Sound
Zahra Malkani
Noorani Echo Sound is a three-part cassette box set by Pakistani interdisciplinary artist and researcher Zahra Malkani, bringing together field recordings and archival material collected between 2020 and 2025. Developed through more than five years of research, the work traces oral and sonic traditions of lament, devotion, and resistance across Pakistan’s coastal and delta regions.
Moving between lullabies, war cries, stories of martyrdom, protest songs, and devotional laments, Noorani Echo Sound explores the intersections of the sonic and the sacred, weaving together histories of ecological resistance, collective mourning, and political struggle.
The box set was produced in connection with Malkani’s first major UK solo exhibition, Noorani Metal Sound, presented at Auto Italia in London in 2026, and is accompanied by a publication bringing together field notes, conversations, and translations. Zahra Malkani was a resident at La Becque in 2025.
