Spheres Collapser

Stephen O'Malley

Developed during his 2021–22 residency at La Becque, Spheres Collapser is a new album by Stephen O’Malley, co-founder of SUNN O))), released by XKatedral in collaboration with La Becque Editions. The record brings together two long-form compositions for pipe organ, performed by O’Malley alongside Kali Malone and Frederikke Hoffmeier. Recorded on the historic Grandes Orgues of Église Saint-François in Lausanne —an instrument shaped across centuries by Scherrer (1777), Walker (1867), and Kuhn (1995) — the album traces its origins to Les Sphères (effondrez-les) Phases I–V, a suite initially composed for a collaboration with Belgian/Swiss choreographer Cindy Van Acker. Rooted in the acoustic and architectural presence of the organ, Spheres Collapser unfolds as a monumental and immersive exploration of resonance, duration, and spatial perception.
