Charles-Antoine Chappuis (1990, CH)
Residency period: July 2020
The result of my month-long residency is a series of investigations into constructing a sound sculpture project that cohesively combines natural elements with movement and sound.
The idea is to create a series of sculptures for an interior space by the water. The movement of the water is recorded through sensors, which is then used to activate the sculpture and make it move to the rhythm of the water. The natural materials that the sculpture is made of then produce sounds through these movements.
As a first approach to this project, I explored the sculptural possibilities of natural “assemblages”. The result is a series of still-lifes, photographed by and in collaboration with Valentin Woeffray, which gently combines with digital sketches of possible forms and mechanisms to be implemented for the actual sculptures themselves.
Based in Amsterdam, Charles-Antoine Chappuis graduated in Graphic Design from ECAL/Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne and specialised in textiles at the Ecole nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre (ENSAV) in Brussels. His work investigates textile structures and related craft processes, resulting in objects and installations that evoke archetypal forms of the home and the experiences connected to it. He has carried out material research for several artists and designers in the Netherlands, while his personal work has featured and been sold in numerous galleries and design shops around the world.
