Artist Communities – Willful Subjects
30.11.2023
Curated by Vanessa Cimorelli, Artist Communities is a quarterly cycle of public encounters and conversations featuring La Becque residents and other artists and protagonists of contemporary art-making. Based primarily on the concept of “community”, each discussion circle offers the public the opportunity to exchange with the speakers on their practices and experiences with regard to key contemporary themes.
This third discussion of the year brought together current residents Sanja Grozdanić, Jelena (Jelly) Luise, and Lebanese artist and writer Bassem Saad and addressed various forms of solidarity. The three artists’ personal approaches, which focus on issues related to war crimes, collective trauma, and anti-imperialism, were the common thread running through this discussion. The aim was to explore together different views on the subject: can we standardize the notion of solidarity or, on the contrary, should we expand it and ask for whom it is rather than for what?
A number of questions raised during this discussion, in the hope of studying in depth the tools, both political and artistic, that enable us to understand the various issues raised by the notion of solidarity. For the guest artists, particular emphasis was placed on the persistent need to stir consciences and find collective solutions.
